Like all left-wing groups, PETA has no shame
As silly as this story sounds, we knew it was just a matter of time, didn’t we? After 135 years of White House Easter Egg Rolls, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is pressuring Michelle Obama to use fake Easter eggs at next Monday’s event.
PETA cites 3 reasons for its objection to the use of real eggs: Egg production is cruel, eating them is unhealthy and it would violate Michelle’s “Let’s Move!” agenda.
In addition to an open letter from PETA president Ingrid E. Newkirk, the organization produced a video featuring young girls pleading with the First Lady to stop the “hellish” use of real eggs at this year’s Egg Roll:
“Just because all the other first ladies have done it doesn’t mean you have to. If all the other first ladies jumped off a bridge, would you?”
Wait – isn’t the “jump off a bridge” analogy supposed to be used the other way around – by parents reasoning with their children?
Anyway, in the letter, Newkirk implores Obama:
“For chickens on egg factory farms, Easter is not a time of renewal or joy. It can take up to 34 hours in typically hellish conditions for a hen to produce just one of the thousands of eggs slated to be used at the Easter Egg Roll.
Furthermore, encouraging the consumption of cruelly sourced, unhealthy eggs is inconsistent with the goals of the ‘Let’s Move!’ initiative.
Eggs are laden with saturated animal fat and cholesterol, which are primary contributors to some of our nation’s top killers, including heart disease and strokes. One single large egg contains more cholesterol than two Big Mac sandwiches do. It’s the wrong message to send to children.”
So PETA throws down the Easter egg gauntlet. The question is: will a liberal White House succumb to pressure from an equally liberal organization? Maybe next year.
By the way, the next time you eat a three-egg omelet, shame on you.
